Stephanie Decker Named “Inspirational Woman” by Woman’s Day

In 2012, Stephanie Decker braved the storm when she risked her life so her children could stay safe during a tornado that hit Henryville, Indiana. In the end, her children were unscathed and Stephanie lost both of her legs after a 20-foot steel beam — a beam that was supporting her entire home — came crashing down on her.

In a recent article for Woman’s Day, Stephanie was listed alongside four other noble women who have gone to great lengths for their children. Each woman has exhibited the utmost strength and has shown exactly how far a mother’s love for her children goes.

The article focuses on four women who, like Stephanie, have been extraordinary models of strength and love for their children.

Stephanie Decker’s Heroic Story

On March 2, 2012, as a category four tornado soared through Henryville, Indiana, Stephanie’s first priority was to ensure that her children were not harmed. Wrapping her two children in a blanket, Stephanie held them and kept them safe as their home came crashing down.

Keeping her children safe, Stephanie herself was injured and had to have both of her legs amputated. She didn’t let this slow her down in any way, however. Turning a negative situation into something positive, Stephanie and her husband founded the Stephanie Decker Foundation, which serves to support children with prosthetics and help them participate in sports.
