Gabe Zichermann’s Tech-Life Balance Tips for Employees

Sheldon Senek•August 9, 2018

In the constantly growing realm of technology, people today are facing an issue those before them never had to face: How can one achieve a perfect balance between life and technology? This problem extends into the workplace as employees are often unsure of the impact that their technology habits have on their work performance.

Technology strategist Gabe Zichermann speaks on gamification and technology addiction in his keynotes. Watch his vlog on how employees can achieve a tech-life balance:

Continue reading for some of the positives and negatives when it comes to technology, as well as how it can be beneficial to your business.

Positives of Using Technology in the Workplace

As a leader, you should strive to create a team that always performs their best, especially when it comes to customer service. Achieving a healthy tech-life balance is especially beneficial for employees because it can result in better sleeping habits, better social skills and overall, a better relationship with technology, which can be beneficial in terms of work performance.

Ensuring that employees maintain this balance and refrain from becoming distracted by technology at work is extremely beneficial when it comes to customer satisfaction. Unless your job requires you to utilize technology when interacting with customers, refraining from doing so will show the customer that they are the number one priority.

Negative Effects of Technology

The negative effects of technology come from the technology you use at home and at work, Gabe says. One of these downsides is lack of productivity.

Too much technology in all aspects of your life can create a stressful and unpleasant environment. For example, if you are constantly staring at a screen instead of doing something productive, you could become anxious, bored and even lonely. As a result, technology has a negative impact on your mindset. It can also get in the way of productivity and negatively impact your performance in the workplace.

How to Battle Technology Addiction

Gabe says companies must take the initiative to help employees understand exactly how a tech-life balance can positively impact their health and wellness. If business leaders took the time help employees manage their relationship to technology, it would benefit them tremendously by improving productivity, happiness and satisfaction.
