3 Ways To Turn Your Passion Into a Meaningful Career

Sheldon Senek•May 24, 2018

Many people believe that business and charity are two separate spheres and must always operate as such. For this reason, many business owners choose to run their companies and charitable operations separately rather than combining the two.

There is a preconceived notion that business owners must choose between profit and philanthropy, causing them to risk losing either one along the way. Mallory Brown, social entrepreneur and global humanitarian, proves otherwise by combining the two and turning her passions into businesses:

1. Recognize the Issue

In the United States alone, women are 35 percent more likely to live in poverty than men, according to the National Women’s Law Center. This does not account for third world countries, where women are at an even higher risk for a life of poverty.

Brown recognized the issue regarding impoverished women around the world and realized it was time for change. Although women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, they only earn 10 percent of the world’s income. To combat this issue, Brown started the Walk a Mile initiative in which she will walk a total of 26 miles with 26 impoverished working women. Her goal is to raise $1 million for working women around the world.

TIP to create a meaningful career: If you see something you don’t like, think about what you can do to change it. Brainstorm ways you can resolve the issue and make a change (personally or professionally).

2. Set a Goal

On her 30th birthday, Brown decided that she wanted to raise $30,000 for 30 Ethiopian women to start their own businesses. She tirelessly worked toward her goal by sharing her story with others and crowdfunding. As a result, she was able to gather enough donors to surpass her goal. She successfully raised over $41,000 in just one day.

TIP to create a meaningful career: Set high goals and expectations for yourself. You’d be surprised at the great things you are able to accomplish.

3. Make a Change

By telling her story, setting goals and taking risks, Brown has been successful in her ventures. Raising $30,000 may sound like a lofty goal that can be difficult to accomplish, but rather than shying away or minimizing her goal, Brown asked for help from others and surpassed her expectations.

TIP to create a meaningful career: Work toward your goal with the utmost persistence and determination to ensure success.
