3 Ways Your Business Can Work for the World

Sheldon Senek•July 23, 2018

As you have probably heard, Starbucks recently announced a new initiative in which the company plans to eliminate all plastic straws from its stores. The company will begin phasing out plastic straws until they are completely eliminated by 2020 in an effort to help the environment.

Starbucks is not the first (or only) company making corporate social responsibility a top  priority. If you are struggling with finding a way to contribute something greater to your community through your business, we are here to help. Here are a few ways you can help your business help the world.

1. Find a cause you are passionate about.

This one may sound straightforward and downright obvious, but finding a worthy cause to put your business behind isn’t always easy. There are so many factors to consider, including cost, how the public will respond, and countless others. One way to find a cause is to search for a social issue or charitable organization that is somehow related to your business. For example, it makes sense for Starbucks to focus on sustainability since the use of plastic — which is largely utilized in the restaurant industry — can drastically harm the environment. With so many things going on in the world, you will help make a difference no matter what social cause your business chooses to work for.

2. Brainstorm ways to help the cause.

Starbucks is working to eliminate the waste and pollution created by plastic straws. Dawn used its dish detergent to clean animals affected by oil spills. What will your business do to help change the world? If you are worried that you lack the time or resources to do something extravagant, you don’t need to worry. You can create change by doing something as simple as raising and donating money to a charitable organization. The opportunities are endless.

3. Take Action.

When Mallory Brown founded World Clothes Line in 2010, her goal was to “clothe the world.” For every piece of clothing sold, the company donated one item of clothing to someone in need. Through the company’s “Buy 1, Give 1” method, Mallory was able to deliver clothes to people in 17 countries around the world. This is just one example of how a business can take action and show that they are dedicated to their cause.
